Every year between the late hours of Christmas Eve and the early hours of Christmas Day, something very special happens. That something is this annual mix.
Here at Astro Nautico we believe in the Christmas Spirit. But we also believe in the joyful perversion of that spirit.
This is a mix for lots of people. People who get sick of the straight-faced candied pop winter wonderland. People who have generally good families but several weird or objectionable relatives. People who didn’t get what they wanted under the tree. Orphans, porn stars, drug addicts.
Astro Nautico proudly presents an alternative holiday mix, full of weird one-off tunes from your favorite Astro Nautico artists under preposterous aliases. Realer than real, occasionally dark, less occasionally triumphant, this is a cosmic yuletide journey.
As my Mom just said, Astro Nautico is ruining Christmas. Again.

UXO is one of the most respected and artistically mature beatmakers in Italy. His aesthetic is deeply spacey, influenced by free-jazz, Kosmische Musik, raw psychedelia and J Dilla instrumental hip hop. He produces cuts that goes from minimal dub, to greasy brown funk, to aethereal psychedelic ambient. He runs a personal web-label, Queenspectra, through which he releases mixtapes, singles, remixes based on his solo work or collabo like Go Savant! (with Grillo), or (((VERSUS))) a remix album with a lot of guest to check out. He’s working right now with Digi G’Alessio on a split album which is going to be released very very soon.
“Savant Ain’t Idiot” is his livemix for Astronautico through which he will share with the listener his Cosmic Vision made of Scifunk and Spacebass.

RDBN (pronounced “Red Bone”) is a mysterious beat-maker & visual artist based in Brooklyn via Philadelphia. He makes crunchy experimental beats using only an SP-303, stacks of vinyl & some sparse synthesizers. They are full of off-kilter drums, fuzz, and raw energy - sort of like this mix.
For this mix, which is entitled “Shoot Your Television,” RDBN selects a diverse & eclectic, yet uniformly raw and exciting, blend of tunes ranging from hip-hop, no-wave & psychedelic to Based God himself.
Additionally, he recently released a little four-track sampling of some of his styles that you can stream over at his bandcamp.
Stay tuned for more music from RDBN in the near future via Astro Nautico.
Another mix from ya Astro boyz - just whipped this one up for my dude SOTR in affiliation with Vane for their Vanity Jukebox mix series.
Obey City is that white boy we’ve all encountered in our neighborhood with too much soul to contain. He’s similar to other modern blue-eyed producer & performers such as Javelin, Onra, and Machinedrum, who keep it electric and weird yet so funky and accessible at the same time. He’s got an ear for classic R&B and hip-hop to accompany his love for progressive house, juke and future garage music. Obey’s DJ sets are typically bright and on the obscure side, as if space travel was open to explore by the public without proper training & certification. Obey City just wants to have fun at his own pace by teasing you with various smooth tracks for any joyous occasion. Buckle up, enjoy the ride and try not to spill your drink or your ice cream!

New Kuhn mix up on London-based bass blog Hyponik today featuring unreleased tracks from Astro Nautico artists under hidden monikers, historic jungle tunes as well some dubs from London and West Coast brethren such as Young Montana? and Matthewdavid.
“Young talent abounds on our latest mix, as we’re welcomed into the multi-faceted world of young Brooklyn talent Kuhn, a man who’s deeply colourful take on world bass looks set to blow up in 2012.
Following a number of self-released free EPs that explored the outer realms of the current bass sound with a sound that took influence from the likes of early jungle, deep South hip-hop and the twisting rhythmics of dark garage, 22 year old Bennett Kuhn is currently sitting on a slew of tracks that push the 2011 template even further. His current ‘Slime Beach’ EP, released via London’s Civil Music, is the first in a series of new EP’s from the young producer, which is winning him fans across the global bass spectrum, from San Franciscan tech-house don Claude Von Stroke, through to the likes of Om Unit and Rinse FM’s Alexander Nut.
His Hyp mix is a sprawling, beat heavy affair that takes in great work from some of our very favourite new artists, whilst tipping its hat that classic jungle sound with tracks from Phillip D. Kick and Ray Keith. Don’t sleep…”

Space Ghost is an Oakland-based producer with a mountainous collection of unreleased beats, each with a very unique vibe but consistently featuring drums that simply crack and thump on under emotionally charged ethereal texture/synthscapes.
Representing the On Task Family, Space Ghost has collaborated with vocalists such as AHYVE, featured on ‘Tha Trip’ (in this mix).
Keep a vigilant eye on Space Ghost’s Soundcloud. New tracks appear there every day only to disappear a week later. Beats as ghosts.

Brighton-based SP beat wizard _lip (pronounced ‘limpid’) is one with his machines, utilizing his Roland SP hardware samplers to craft filthy, fuzzy hip-hop instrumentals out of the N64′s iconic, nostalgic audioscape. This mix showcases his lo-fi sound in all its faded, warbling, crackling glory.
_lip also actively produces under innumerable other monikers, never focusing on any one sonic fingerprint for too long. At least half this mix is original.
As an audio ghost, _lip has up until now remained barely traceable, but his recently founded SLF Tapes digi-label is poised to serve as homebase for his efforts as well as those of other members of the international SP beat community. Inaugurating the catalogue is a 5-track EP from _lip’s Warm Thighs moniker.
Still, the M.O. is anonymity, letting the music speak for itself:
“the circle exists as the whole, (original entity) and it’s fractions, (legs) to display it’s variants. An identity typically masked and composed up other identities. the monikers.
further, the seven legged face represents the entity and it’s subparts sprouting out from an intentionally defaced product. the manifestations of an occurring moniker should stand fast in it’s ability to degrade and yet produce a beautiful subject typically rejected by majority and common populace. ignorance forces the viewer/listener to observe the curation putting aside prejudice and opinion. ”traditions” have been degraded, and a common moniker has been set in place to upload the yardstick for the intentionally chaotic and “lo-fi” composition.
when something is perceived instantly without lag or distraction, it can then be understood forever.”
This is definitely one of the stranger Astrocasts we’ve had so far. Very little is known about this dude, except that he is evidently chest-deep in esoteric/occult music. Relentlessly churning out epic mix after epic mix, primarily for our friends at Dior Nights, following ƸC†OPL∆SM‘s neon output is like staring at a waterfall, on acid. This is a radioactive mix punctuated by extreme violence and extreme weirdness, interspersed with moments of hazy serenity. Not for the faint of heart nor mind.
A couple posts back we announced we’ve been working with B-more experimental footwork artist howse. Here’s his contribution to our mix series, possibly the rowdiest, jankiest Astrocast yet.
Large sectors of 2011′s global experimental electronic music cyber-community have soaked up juke like it’s the new dubstep, and in this environment there’s a huge difference between those people who’ve tuned into Planet Mu’s output alone and those people who’ve dug deeper into its roots.
This mix taps into Chicago itself, into the entire cultural phenomenon of juke: the music, the footwork, the general lo-fi ghettotechnical genius. It also gives listeners a sense of the basis for howse’s original music, for how truly innovative and abstract his tunes are.
Which brings us to ‘trakz EP,’ howse’s latest effort, which is all set to drop here September 9.

- STAY TUNED -

Time to spill the beans! We’re proud to announce that B-more producer howse‘s new ’Trakz EP’ will be released for free download here on AstroNautico.com on August 28th.
Those unacquainted with howse’s sound should immediately listen to his masterful new mixtape for Rhythm Incursions, which altogether plays like a howse record: weightless, melancholic, deranged and soulful vocals, crackling texture-scapes and vintage atmospheric synth pads meet with quantized nimble rhythmic experimentation and powerful, deep sub rumblings.
A seamless tour through practically every genre of contemporary electronic music worth listening to, this mix ends up running at slower tempos than howse’s characteristic experimental footwerk tracks, which should give you an idea of his range and control of sound.
Also available free online to stream/download are howse’s two previous self-released EPs on his bandcamp page.
To tide y’all over until we reveal tracklisting & artwork for ‘Trakz EP’ next week, we’re sharing this new howse rewerk of Alicia Keys’ seminal ‘I’m Ready,’ exclusively available for free download here. Plus, he’s got an Astrocast on the way. Stay tuned!!
