Dane Chadwick – Cool Intentions

Hello friends,

We are proud to announce that our first release of 2013 will be an LP from Dane Chadwick, a name you may recognize from Atlantics Vol. 2.

Having spent years as a drummer for LA-based bands such as Abe Vigoda, it is no surprise that raw, polyrhythmic drum programming forms the bedrock of Dane Chadwick’s debut album Cool Intentions. These frenetic footwork rhythms are combined with smooth and soothing self-programmed synth patches to create a bubble bath of an album.

Chadwick is a master of building and releasing tension. On ‘Water Work’ synthesizers rush together and form waves of sound that build even as they recede, like an audible version of Escher’s infinite stairway. Tracks like ‘Dope’ and ‘vowelS’ on the other hand rely on rhythmic abstraction as the grid blurs and drums fall so far behind they are ahead.

The lightning rimshots, cascading tom rolls and relentless kick drums say Chicago footwork, but Chadwick’s sound is nowhere derivative. Liquid drum kinetics meet breathy jazz chords and warped vocal exhortations, bending the footwork template to evoke hazy California sunshine.

Completed by vibrant remixes from Lemonada and Dap Hound, Cool Intentions is an exuberant, confident and wholeheartedly unique album.

Check out ‘Water Work’ below, which will be featured on the album along with 7 original tracks and a pair of remixes from Lemonada and Dap Hound.

Astro Nautico @ FREECANDY 3/1/13

Back for another 1st Friday that falls on the 1st of the month, we have a very special night for you on March 1st with the ultra-prolific, verified badman HxdB coming in all the way from Vancouver alongside one of our favorite local acts in Archie Pelago – a finely tuned live performance/production group that needs to be seen (and heard!) to be believed.

We will be once again firing up the Tsunami Bass Sound System in FREECANDY – a former car parking garage filled with street art, day-glo UV paint, a full-service bar and a 20’ x 12’ projection area. Astro Nautico residents will be holding down all the in-between sounds for the night and Paul Jones will be curating movie-theatre-sized VHS video projections.

We’ll also stream the whole night live on Ustream for our foreign friends.

As always, you don’t have to be a music head in order to enjoy what we’re planning. Thunderous bass weight and raw visuals form a potent electronic cocktail capable of offering just about anyone a uniquely invigorating party experience.

Virtuality #6

1. Mattron – Spills

Instant classic new beatz tape from the Yung Money God straight out of Long Island, Mattron. Grimy cassette textures over big basement drums, in a room filled with so much purple smoke that you can’t see 4 feet in front of you.

2. Black Jungle Squad – Black Jungle Radio

More double raw beat gum tape, from a West Coast state of mind. Perfect example of why Jeremiah Jae is one of the freshest, most exciting mc/producer/artists out there. Straight from the underbelly of the beast, with a hot joint on there produced by Lord RAJA aka RAJA BLACK.

3. Soosh – Colour is Breathe

Beautifully crafted, warmly textured instrumentals from Soosh, who has found solid ground in a liquid production style. The album will be available as double LP on Error Broadcast, February 25th, and features female vocalist Carmel Khavari on a handful of tracks.

4. Lotide – Iboga Nights

Continuing along this line of highly textural, abstract beat music comes GOK fam Lotide with “Iboga Nights” – a limited re-release of music made from 2011-2012. Sounds like being up at 5am, too faded to remember if you were going to bed or waking up… What is time, anyway? Doesn’t matter, cop one of these remaining CD-Rs and keep it close to your pillow.

5. Luxar – More

The black sheep of this Virtuality, Luxar arrives at the 5 spot with a lush, 80s style mini-EP, recently released on French label Juicy. Straight up-and-down, mid-tempo bangers that shamelessly embrace vintage synths and neon colors.

Astro Nautico @ FREECANDY 2/1/13

We will be once again firing up the Tsunami Bass Sound System in FREECANDY – a former car parking garage filled with street art, day-glo UV paint, a full-service bar and a 20’ x 12’ projection area. Astro Nautico residents will be holding down all the in-between sounds for the night and Paul Jones will be curating movie-theatre-sized VHS video projections along with guest VJ OPHTHAMOVNTN.

We’ll also stream the whole night live on Ustream for our foreign friends. (we apologize for the audio problems last time! they will be fixed).

ASTROCAST31: Michael Jukeson

ASTROCAST31: Michael Jukeson by Astro Nautico on Mixcloud

Our 31st Astrocast is a very special one, and is brought to you by a very special person. Michael Jukeson – our newest resident for the monthly FREECANDY events – exists at the crossroads of Light and Dark. One of the best and most versatile party DJs around, MJ spins catchy dance trax that will move even the stoniest of stone cold crowds. Some might say this is a reflection of his notoriously insatiable hunger for sugary snacks. Unknown to most, however, is Jukeson’s dark side. His own productions come from a deep and scary place, where many bodies are likely buried. Sharing a similar aesthetic to Astro fam artist Howse, MJ’s music is like pit of snakes – writhing, alien movements coupled with sound’s rooted in ancient biological horror. In light of this – or more so, in darkness of this – we granted MJ his wish to create a 28-minute long original track in lieu of a traditional Astrocast mix.

You’ve been warned.

Interview

1. Ok MJ, first things first… do you identify more with Michael Jackson or… Michael Jordan?

Both, at the same time.

2. Your name is Michael Jukeson, yet you rarely produce or DJ juke music, if ever. Plz explain.

The name came from when I was in this band called Tuna Turner and the Long Island Iced Tease. We had dubbed ourselves the Jukeson’s as an inside joke (i.e. Michael Jukeson, Jermaine Jukeson, La Toya Jukeson) but then the band broke up and I ended up keeping the name. It causes a lot of confusion but it’s whatever. I don’t want to pinned down as doing any one thing musically or as a DJ and having a misleading name is a good start.

3. The music you produce is also very different from the music you DJ, i.e. dark, serial killer stuff vs. big booty shakers. Is this juxtaposition intentional?

I really enjoy the juxtaposition between the music I play out and my own production although I cannot say it was 100% intentional. My own production is very personal and isn’t always meant to be operational on a dance floor. I was in a dark place when I started making music and have used my music to climb out of that place. When I DJ, it is not about me, it’s more about the crowd and how they are feeling. I just lend my taste to suit their needs on the dance floor.

4. Sweets are featured heavily in the life of Michael Jukeson. What is the relationship between sugary treats and your music/ethos/life?

Sweets are my life. I do not have the words to describe this relationship.

5. What is in this 28 minute track you’ve given us?

There is a lot in there. I just wanted to challenge myself and break out of structure and just explore for a bit. It deals with the relationship between chaos and calm, rhythmic and arrhythmic, dance floor and headphone. I learned a lot through the process of this tune and I am excited to see the response.

Astro @ FREECANDY 1/4/13 Recap

Last Friday we had our first event of 2013 at FREECANDY Brooklyn, NY. We brought back original Astro artists Howse, Time Wharp and The Range, who all played at our inaugural FC event back in July along with M. Constant and RAJA. Atlantics contributor and recent Astro signee Chits rocked the early set, and native producer/MC Chaz Van Queen took the mic at midnight for a rare, surprise mini-set. As always, guests were accompanied by residents Obey City, Paul Jones, and recently added Michael Jukeson.

Things went bump in the night.

If you missed this one, we hope to see you on February 1st for Braille/Octo Octa!

It seems we are not the only label giving away holiday goodies this year – LuckyMe continues their tradition of the advent calender by giving away exclusive free tunes, which began on Christmas and will continue until January 5th.

You can go over to their website and grab them as the months progress. 1st day was Astro Nautico’s own Obey City, following with Machinedrum and today’s offering (above), a really powerful synth-driven ambient/drone piece by Sevendeaths called “All Night Graves.”
