XXXMas Hollerday Mix 2012 by Astro Nautico on Mixcloud
Also, check out this lovely collection of piano bootlegs and previews from our homie Starchild, edited & finessed by RAJA.
“As an homage to Prince and some of his Intimate Piano Sessions from 1983, I’ve featured two covers of his & versions of unreleased songs from me. Including “Crucial” (the brief intro to Night Music), the title track of my next project, soon to come.”
Much love & see you in 2013
On Friday, January 4th, wipe down that 2-day New Year’s Eve hangover and get back on the neon horse with us at FREECANDY – a former car parking garage filled with street art, day-glo UV paint, a full-service bar and a 20’ x 12’ projection area.
We’re bringing back some the original Astro artists who played our first huge event here back in July, with added young gun Chits and a couple surprise special guests. Astro Nautico residents will be holding down all the in-between sounds for the night and Paul Jones will be curating movie-theatre-sized VHS video projections along with Elijah Rosa Pratts.
We’ll also stream the whole night live on Ustream for our foreign friends.
As always, you don’t have to be a music head in order to enjoy what we’re planning. Thunderous bass weight and raw visuals form a potent electronic cocktail capable of offering just about anyone a uniquely invigorating party experience.

January 4th, 2013
FREECANDY
905 Atlantic Avenue (located next to the “Roofing” sign)
Brooklyn, NY 11238
More virtuality for dat azz. Some serious sounds have been drifting our way over the past couple weeks, and it’s time again to share them with y’all.
1. Vlek Records – Complete Catalogue – Years 1 & 2
In celebration of their two-year anniversary, the inimitable Vlek Records recently released their entire discography – lined with heady producers like Ssaliva/Cupp Cave, Wanda Group and Sagat – for free. We strongly recommend not thinking twice before downloading the whole damn thing as it is lined with fuzzy gems that will keep your headphones warm all winter long.
2. SOS – SxOxS
Tipped off to us by the multi-talented Starchild, for whom this Philadelphia-based artist has produced some tracks for (‘Gemini’/'This Night Out’), SOS is out the gate with an EP full of warm and rare 80s-style smooth jamz. Pour yourself a glass of champagne, press play in front of a fireplace and watch that blank wall to the right of you turn into a glass window overlooking Ibiza’s most private beach.
3. Big Voyage
Some of the most melodic and catchy dance shit we’ve heard in a minute, and Brooklyn grown! His profile picture on soundcloud is probably a better description of the music than any words we can think of right now, so press play and set sail for a course that goes deep into the night.
4. Kidnap Kid – Alphaville
So yeah this came out in May earlier this year but we totally missed it probably cuz we were still floating in the sky after Atlantics Vol. 2. Thanks to our resident Lost Boy, Michael Jukeson for the heads up. Catchy, superbly-produced dance music.
5. REKchampa – Self-Serve
In a similar vein as the last two slots of this Virtuality, REKchampa slides in at the number 5 spot with his new ‘Self-Serve’ EP, featuring his signature bouncy and warm 2-step production style. Once it bites you, the venom warms your blood into a stupor that makes you want to hit play again and again, and tricks your brain into believing that everything will be ok… when really we all know the apocalypse is tomorrow.

10PM
2012 has been an unprecedented year for electronic music. Ancient predictions loom that the end may be near, or at least some winds beginning to blow. With all this in mind, OTS has called upon a handful of NYC’s finest electronic music purveyors to stake their claim as the #1 sound in town.
With revolving drink specials all night, and an insane roster of talent, expect the deepest selections, the most exclusive dubs and above all else, the unexpected.
Old in the game and highly regarded as an international source of cutting edge talent, Percussion Lab will be in the building cooking up some sonic concoctions of potent rhythms.
Steady grinding in this cash burning mecca, Broke City will be hustling their fresh take on the grey area between traditional house and ghetto sounds.
With one of the deepest and adventurous catalogs of original material, and artist connections from here to Moscow, Astro Nautico will be moving water and sky to lure your aural sense into a stir.
Then of course, the home team, on.the.sly sneaks in to drop the consistently eclectic and engaging assault of rhythms with that NYC boom-bap attitude.
Citizens of NYC, we all call on you to stand up, get down, sip slow and move fast. Come judge for yourself who has the #1 sound in town.
Back with another episode of “Virtuality” – virtually the best tunes in your spiritually virtual digital world.
1. Lemonada – Kelly Green Vol. 2
Wild-ass collection of bangers by mad Irish-man Lemonada. Footwork, hip-hop, dancehall, old skool rave, grime – he tackles it all, but with his signature palette of unpredictable and clattering percussion, FM synths and warped vocals.
2. #BBM – Volume 1.
A dope & eclectic compilation put together by the Montreal based party crew Booty Bakery. Featuring tunes from local dudes like Doctor Jeep and Nadus, as well as some canucks in Hesk and Ryan Hemsworth, it should satisfy your bass vices in numerous ways (I mean there’s booze, weed AND cupcakes in the artwork). Peep the teaser below and download it tomorrow:
3. Night Drugs
Through listening to the above compilation’s teaser, I discovered Night Drugs, a smooth ass production duo? from Montpellier, France. Their soundcloud is full of gold, especially the teasers – which I can verify from having heard the full versions, are not just teases – let’s just say they put out. WORD! Here’s my favorite of em:
4. Feadz & Kito – Wettex (Cashmere Cat Remix)
As if this guy needed to drop any more hits to convince anyone he was on one…Mirror Maru is an absolute gem of an EP and then he drops this incredible rework of a tune I would have little to no interest otherwise and forces me to love it. The cat’s outta the bag.
5. Djemba Djemba – I Just Go (Remixes)
Oops! Gotta play favorites for a minute. The Melt-Affiliate and already big dawg producer Djemba Djemba just released the follow up remix compilation of his single “I Just Go” which came out a couple months ago on Jeffries. Featuring re-twerks by Falcons, Yung Satan, PhilipAlways, FootwoRk, and ya boi (I told you I was playing favorites!) it’s got some serious heaters for the dancefloor. And the trap kids will be happy…isn’t that what we all want?
That it’s kiddies – stay tuned for volume #5 next week (hopefully).

Kings EP Teaser (CIV053) – 12” Vinyl/Digital Coming Soon On Civil Music by Kuhn
BUY VINYL OR DIGITAL AT CIVIL STORE
Kuhn’s sophomore effort for Civil Music, Kings EP is a collection of four diverse uptempo club tracks with an eclectic sampling palette and Footwork-inspired rhythmic complexities.
“I Quit,” featuring Astro Nautico brother in arms and LuckyMe contributor Obey City, flips a glittery pitched-up soul loop into an 808-fuelled dance floor workout with insistent vocal mantras and a jumpy kick drum rhythm. “NWYRK” grabs horns from Cuban Carnival music and places them over an off-kilter tom shuffle. “Boombox” merges hyper-pitched rave stabs, quaking sub kicks and sultry female vocal cutups to form a halftime beat before flipping into a hyperspeed finale. Finally, “Never Forget” carves massive choral samples into a manic haze with added hyperactive kick drums and lightning trap fills. The EP includes remixes of “I Quit” by Muscovite Pixelord and Atlanta’s Time Wharp. The former a warm laid back exercise in Russian Juke and the latter a smooth yet jacking kick lead house heater.
The Kings EP pays homage to Kings County, the county of Brooklyn. The photography and artwork (also by Kuhn) show a Kings skyline and the Williamsburgh Savings Bank Tower. Look out for Video for “I Quit” by Paolo Xz.
Jacob 2-2 is extremely talented. Take even a small glance at his work and you will be struck by the iceberg of rich, colorful sounds and textures that connect both his music and his visuals. Based in Brooklyn, Jacob (not his real name) has done remixes for King Deluxe and Broken Bubble, self-released two EPs on his own imprint Cereal System, released his latest EP with Moodgadget, and has just returned from a brief European tour. His music has been aptly described by Com Truise as “Perfect sound design with hints of vintage computing…visions of a video age slowly melting in the sky.” We will leave you then with this beautiful Astrocast – our 30th thus far – which is dedicated to the late Jerry Nelson, and allow you to come to a similar conclusion.
Interview
1. Where does the name Jacob 2-2 come from? It’s definitely familiar but I can’t quite place it..
It’s a series of children’s books. There is also a cartoon series, but I mainly got it from the 1978 film “Jacob Two-Two Meets the Hooded Fang”
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076222/
It’s the most beautifully disturbing children’s film of all time. There was also a remake done in the 90′s with Gary Busey, which I haven’t seen.
2. There is a definitively warm aesthetic connecting all of your music, which centers around some amazing synth work. Without giving away too many secrets, what kind of synths are you using? Are you just sitting in a crystal cavern filled with moogs and rolands?
The only hardware synths I have are a Novation K-Station and a Roland Juno 6, which was a gift and has become an integral part of everything I do. Other than that, I use a lot of the Native Instruments and Arturia soft-synths, VHS and vinyl samples and anything else I can get my hands on.
3. This is isn’t something a lot of people know, but you also do some great video work, coupling your music with vintage VHS-style clips, which we got to see in action when you performed at our August FREECANDY show. How big of a connection do you see between your visuals and your music? Any video projects on the horizon?
I work as a motion graphic designer, so I try to integrate video and animation into the live show as much as possible. That way people have something to look at besides a nerd behind a laptop. Whenever I add a new track into the live set I try to have a visual that corresponds with it, and i’m starting to use VDMX more so that they can be triggered and synched with each track. I put together some “blip vert” style clips of my visuals here:
https://vimeo.com/cerealsystem
I’ve also been collaborating with a 3D artist (http://samuelrhodes.com) and planning to do a full-length video next year.
4. You recently toured Europe – how was your experience there? Can we expect a 2013 Jacob 2-2 global takeover?
Hopefully. Going out there was the best decision I’ve made in years and I’m going to try to set up a proper tour for next summer. Amsterdam and The Hague were amazing. Met some really wonderful people. Shout outs to all my Dutch homies. Brighton and Berlin were great too.
5. Who is Jerry Nelson and why is this mix dedicated to him?
The voice of Gobo Fraggle, Robin, The Count, Emmitt Otter and many more. He passed away earlier this year. R.I.P. That’s also his voice on the first Durlin Lurt track. Not sure where exactly the sample is from. I’m guessing either from the Muppet Show or Sesame Street.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand WE’RE BACK.
Sandy was a bitch that nobody liked, but she’s not invited this time. This night is going to be bigger than Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, New Years, Chinese New Years and the Apocalypse all rolled into one. It is also an Astro Nautico BIRTHDAY celebration, with the 7th falling squarely in between Paul Jones‘ and Obey City‘s December life anniversaries, and a belated November celebration for the Scorpio, Kuhn. Due to this and the additional guest DJs we’ll be rocking for an extra hour and opening doors at 9 PM.
Expect things to be fully turnt up.
This is our last monthly event of the year at FREECANDY, a former car parking garage filled with street art, neon UV paint, a full-service bar and a 20’ x 12’ projection area.
We’re bringing in another cast of six globally-minded young producers and DJs, all of whom have been itching to burn the roof down since our cancelled November 2nd event. This night also marks our first overseas guest in Seb Wildblood, hailing from London. Astro Nautico residents will be holding down all the in-between sounds for the night and Paul Jones will be curating movie-theatre-sized VHS video projections along with guest VJ Elijah Rosa Pratts.
Come Celebrate With Us.
