Phanes - Lucky Woman

Impeccable sample work in this tune and the VHS video is fantastic as well. Phanes, a South London ting innit. Also peep ‘Silo Waltz.’ Real deal for real.

Rimar - World Drop

A HUGE second release from Brooklyn producer, Rimar. ‘World Drop’ superbly throws lush samples into a blender on high speed, tossing in plenty of big drums and reverb to create a delicious smoothie that is perfect for just about any setting I can think of. Another amazing FREE album, go cop it right now!

How We Do: Moves Made

Been eagerly anticipating this one ever since Eliot showed me some of the early demos that he and Jeff (aka Jasia 10) had been working on. Known collaboratively as “How We Do” (or as I like to spell it, “Howie Doo“) the duo dropped their debut record, Moves Made, today via Eliot’s label Old Tacoma Records.

The end result does not disappoint; this is modern funk at it’s finest, like some smooth airplane pimp shit. Full of phat synth bass-lines, glittery melodies & even some saxophones (!!!), it’s clear that the two crate-diggers hold their influences close, while simultaneously being able to transform these sounds of the past into something futuristic and unique.

If you’re on top of yo shit, you can grab it for free today over at Old Tacoma’s home page.

Check out one of my favorite jams, “You” below.

Fire For Effect

“Progressive emotional b-more house”, tweeted by Fire For Effect himself, is a pretty accurate way to describe this music. Founder of Coral Records, a consequence of the relatively recent SEAPUNK movement, which also includes some of Witch House’s brighter graduates (teams, Zombelle, Myrrh Ka Ba), Fire For Effect is deeply embedded in the new-age/tropical aesthetic associated with the “genre” and is quickly making a name for himself with dance-floor banger after dance-floor banger. Peep the tracks below, many of which are available for free download, as well as the debut compilation on Coral Records featuring tracks by Slava, Le1f and more.

Raja’s Halloween

Ladies and Gentlemen, the rumors are true. Lord Raja of Guns of Kingston aka The Artist Formerly Known as Infinitirock aka James Dyson Blake aka Gandolf Duke aka Herman the Octopus is going to be releasing a TRIPLE LP right here on Astro Nautico this Halloween.

The first album, ‘Red’, will consist of bass-heavy, sample driven beats rich in texture and soul similar to Raja’s previous output as Infinitirock. The second album, ‘Witch’ is a hard-nosed collection of trap beats that you can play really loud in your car or your club or in your living room if you don’t want any trick-or-treaters. The third and final album of the release, ‘Color’, switches in style completely, featuring Raja’s songwriting skills with an emphasis on vocals and piano over the usual big drums and subs.

The albums will be released over the course of three consecutive days - the 30th, 31st, and November 1st.

In two weeks, on Monday October 17th, we will also be releasing a single from the Lord, with a remix from Kuhn as an appetizer for this mammoth event. Stay tuned for more info and surprises as we approach the end of the month.

Raja - Red Rhythm

Young Montana? - Bonsoir

New Yungmo up on Soundcloud today. A detuned choir of synthesizers renovates the nostalgic longing of Chris Clark’s ‘Clarence Park,’ spaces expand and collapse, things strain. Digital oneironautics.

‘Bonsoir’ is probably actually even more innovative rhythmically than melodically. Juked out 808 rimshot frenzies accent a frenetic 2-step shuffle whose occasional shudders and skips nod to YM?’s earlier work as well as the whole Flylo-through-Dilla/Madlib philosophy of fudging the quantization grid and making it work for you.

This is writing between the lines. My vote for best track of the year so far.

And for comparison, here’s a rarity.

Inflatable Mattress - Pumped Up / Blue Mattress

The homies over at Wigflip Records sent over their newest upcoming release(s) by Inflatable Mattress: Pumped Up and Blue Mattress. These chopped n’ splattered beats seep into one another with a hazy, half-conscious vibe, while still maintaining the warm aesthetic that Wigflip is consistently delivering. This one works best as a straight listen, so it’d be in your best interest to head over to their site, support & cop the tape for $5. In the meantime, “nod your head and nod off” to this one…

ASTROCAST14: ECTOPLASM

ASTROCAST14: ƸC†OPL∆SM by Astro Nautico on Mixcloud

This is definitely one of the stranger Astrocasts we’ve had so far. Very little is known about this dude, except that he is evidently chest-deep in esoteric/occult music. Relentlessly churning out epic mix after epic mix, primarily for our friends at Dior Nights, following ƸC†OPL∆SM‘s neon output is like staring at a waterfall, on acid. This is a radioactive mix punctuated by extreme violence and extreme weirdness, interspersed with moments of hazy serenity. Not for the faint of heart nor mind.
