For our 27th Astrocast we have another stanky-dank mini-mix from Long Island-based ‘Pants Morgan’ Mattron of our East Coast brothers-in-arms, the Guns of Kingston crew. Squeezed through cassette and back, the mix has an undeniable saturation and character that will make you want to hit play again and again (we recommend recording it to cassette yourself and bumping it in the trunk). His ‘Personaltape/Pants Morgan Money Tape‘ filled with warmly-mixed golden-era hip hop style beats that was released late last year is a testament to the man’s production power and a sign of what we can expect from yung Mattron in the future. You might spot him at our monthly FreeCandy shows holding a VHS camera and if you find his lens upon you – ladies, please twerk that ass.
interview
1. Who is Mattron and what is playing on his TV? Where does ‘Pants Morgan’ come from?
Mattron is a 19 year old music producer from Long Island, [adult swim] stays on my TV, and if it’s not adult swim it’s Law & Order (I’m a 50 year old on the low) or something with David Duchovny. I’m not really at liberty to talk about where ‘Pants Morgan’ came from. Gonna have to leave everyone in the dark.
2. What is Guns of Kingston in 2012? A league of super villains? A professional basketball team?
Guns of Kingston is a high school basketball team, and a group of tight ass ‘producers’ I guess. Producers sounds so wack, but yeah we all make music. Oh, and this one kid Joe, he doesn’t make music but still draws animals in crayon on shit.
3. Tapes, tapes tapes. Can you explain your use of VHS and cassette tapes in your audio-visual productions? If you made a tape casserole what would be the main ingredients?
As for cassette, I run most of my shit through cassette now because that’s exactly how I always wanted my shit to sound anyway. Warm as fuck and all that… and that just goes with the VHS. aesthetically, that shit works perfectly for me… it’s beautiful garbage, haha. And, my tape casserole is simple: Maxwell cassette tapes, du-rags, yogurt and money.
4. Who is Sidewalk Kal? Any other upcoming projects we should know about?
Sidewalk Kal is an MC from Jersey who I linked up with almost a year ago now, and yeah he’ll be around for a while. We’ve been working on shit since we linked. Right now we’re working on the Sidewalk Kal – Kough video, though.
5. What are 5 things that you keep in your backpack at all times?
A CD that only has Cella Dwellaz and Chief Keef on it, a single grape swisher, twizzlers, Orajel, and my wallet (complete with racks).
